I've finally done it. I've marked my Facebook account for deletion and I feel strangely liberated!
So, why have I taken this bold step? Frankly, I just can't be arsed with it any more. I've completely lost track of what's public and what's private and I don't really feel any particular desire to find out. I don't care what games people are playing, and I'll be caring even less what music they're listening to, what TV shows they're watching and what web sites they're visiting. If I want to know, I'll ask someone - I don't need it streamed to me in real time.
To be honest, I mostly used it as a promotional tool, and that was pretty much more work than it was worth.
What was the last straw for me? I guess it was the whole "Oh look, they're storing your data even after you've logged out" and the "Oh no we're not" argument of late and the fact that I really can't be bothered to go and find out the truth of it, and neither should I have to. And reading this post made me realise just how useless I find it.
So, what am I using for my Social Networking fix? Well, I'm mostly on Google+ at the moment, with a large dose of Twitter chucked in for good measure. I'm liking Google+ - you don't get the timeline filled with useful nuggets such as "I'm off to the toilet..." for a start - and I'm starting to find I'm getting "breaking news" quicker than on Twitter, but that's maybe because I've got less clutter coming in, so it's easier to find. I also find I'm actually, well, interacting with people, which surely is the point of all this stuff? So, It's Google+ for me this week, but who knows what's around the corner.
If you're one of the few people that wanted to communicate something useful to me via Facebook, you can now find me on the aforementioned services and, of course, here.
Off now to enjoy all that extra time I now have due to not having to sort through all that Facebook crap :)
Okay, I admit it, I folded and I'm back on Facebook.
I didn't miss it one little bit. Problem is, so many of my sites and apps are tied into it, I kinda have to use it.
Oh well, it was worth a shot!
